Our structured yet flexible training programmes ensure everyone who works for us, regardless of their role, position or length of service, can realise their full potential. This is good for your personal development and it drives our business forward too.

We have been an Investors in People accredited business since 1998 and have recently gained a ‘gold accreditation’, which is only awarded to the top 17% of employers. We recognise that all our employees need to be invested in, including support staff. This approach supports our Equality Policy, and also increases productivity and morale across the whole company.

Annual appraisals coupled with staff surveys gives everyone a chance to explore their training needs and reflect on the training already received. We also encourage everyone to consider soft skills such as assertiveness and time management, as well as more practical training such as IT skills, or training that helps towards obtaining Chartered Status in a professional field or CPD.

These opportunities to contribute, alongside regular appraisals, help you take control of your own training and development and reach your professional goals.

Chartered Training Programme (APC)

Our internal Assessment of Professional Competence (APC) training programme is long established and currently has 40 candidates enrolled across all of our offices.

Specifically targeted at graduates, including our non-cognate candidates, the programme lasts 24 months and focuses on quantity surveying and construction and project management pathways. You are also allocated an appropriate supervisor and counsellor within the business, who monitors and supports your progress throughout the programme.

Candidates from across the business attend quarterly APC training sessions held in London which cover the mandatory, core and optional competencies. Each session is hosted by two of our APC Coaches and includes presentations on two to three competencies, Q&A and feedback from recently qualified surveyors or project managers on their experience of the APC process and Final Assessment. The sessions also give the opportunity for candidates across the business to meet and discuss the APC.

There’s a Pre-Qualification Process that starts seven months before you sit your Final Assessment, which ensures your final submission documentation is completed in good time to enable you to focus on revising in the run-up to the Final Assessment. The process makes sure you’re ready and prepared to sit the exam.

Apprenticeships

Our apprenticeship scheme gives you an outstanding opportunity to enter the industry and instantly ‘earn while you learn’. You will work alongside team members, with varied levels of experience, in a supportive working environment where you can put your newly found skills into practice.

During your apprenticeship you will receive:

• A dedicated mentor who will guide you through the programme and towards your goal of achieving a professionally recognised qualification
• A competitive salary
• A fully funded course including degree courses for quantity surveyors and project managers
• A nurturing working environment with a culture that promotes self-development
• An opportunity to grow your career beyond your apprenticeship.

Non-Cognate Graduate Programme

Our non-cognate programme allows us to attract graduates with outstanding skills but with limited or no construction experience, and offer you the opportunity to develop as a quantity surveyor or project manager through a fully supported training scheme.

All graduates are assigned a senior surveyor within the firm who acts as a mentor and guides you through the programme. The scheme is made up of several elements including a set of training modules, developed by human resources and surveyors, which offer a practical insight into the world of construction. For authenticity, most modules contain exercises based on historical Henry Riley projects and offer a realistic ‘dry run’ environment for you to learn in. The modules can fit around your work as well as conversion courses.

Developed in-house, the programme won a Building QS Award for ‘Best Training Initiative’ and continues to help us recruit talented graduates. Since the launch of the programme, one employee has been promoted to partner and there are several others progressing in their career at Henry Riley.

Corporate Team Training

Our employees are the key to our success and in order to foster a learning culture throughout the whole organisation, we provide training to all employees, not just the consultancy team. Teams in accounts, marketing and human resources are currently studying for qualifications in their respective fields.

As a member of the corporate team, you are also encouraged to obtain membership and qualifications in your chosen professions. All training is funded by us, and we give you as much flexibility as possible so you can study part time, in the evenings or on day release.
