The morning of Day 2 began with a short recap of Day 1 and keynote speaker Abel Maciel giving an insightful presentation on the global challenges to the economy, the creation of sustainable cities, and his research into using ‘Blockchain’ technology in the built environment. BIM was praised for already having a positive impact on the industry by creating integrated project teams and a more fluid and cohesive process of design and management. Abel believes this will continue to improve the quality of projects and the built environment as a whole in the near future, however we must carry the momentum.
Following the morning session, Adam attended a seminar on ‘When QSs become geeks and architects learn about NRM’. This session focused on the interactions between the Designer and the QS and how models can allow the cost manager to get the most from the data. The presentation used a case study of a large retailer and how they have successfully created a framework which utilises 3D Modelling for design, costing and management.
The key message from this session was that the successful implementation of BIM is a front loaded process and that putting the work in at the earlier stages of the project encourages a more fluid process as the project progresses. The interactions between the members of the project team are crucial and we have taken away the following:
- Ensure a data-rich model is produced early on, which is crucial in order to understand and discuss the parameters of the model and object naming methods with the designers;
- Allow time to create cost plans and pricing documents that can be fully integrated with the native and federated models –it is crucial to get the process started from day one in order to fully satisfy the Employer’s Information Requirements;
- There is not necessarily a one-size-fits-all solution for successful 3D costing – whilst the open source format (IFC) is widely accepted as an effective way of using a model across different platforms and software, the presenter’s view was that DWFx can prove as effective, if not more, if the model is built in the correct way from the outset;
- Consistency in models is absolutely crucial – if data is not consistent or incorrect then it can be untrustworthy and essentially useless.
Sessions attended in the early afternoon included ‘Embrace the Future, Map on the move – and don’t get left behind!’ which discussed the need to embrace the fourth Industrial Revolution and to keep pushing the boundaries of technology to provide professionals with the tools necessary to make better and more intelligent 3D models. The presenters carried out a live demonstration of how to use 3D handheld mobile laser scanning to quickly produce a 3D model of a hallway. One of the key messages of the session was how fast technology is progressing and how simple 3D mobile mapping systems have become.
Despite the weather disruptions, BIM Show Live 2018 was overall very successful and invaluable to us as a firm. It is vital to know that we are moving forward with the industry and embracing the impact technological changes will have on Quantity Surveying and Project Management services – however we must keep pushing and maintaining momentum as BIM becomes more prevalent across the industry.
